Chronic nasal obstruction can encourage mouth breathing and changes in jaw, tongue, head, and neck position.

These changes may contribute to jaw muscle tension and TMJ discomfort in some patients.

TMJ dysfunction has many possible causes. Nasal obstruction is one factor that may be overlooked.

Snoring and sleep-disordered breathing may coexist with nighttime clenching or grinding.

An ENT evaluation can identify structural or inflammatory problems that interfere with nasal breathing.

When people think about nasal obstruction, they usually think about congestion, difficulty breathing, snoring, or poor sleep. What they may not realize is that difficulty breathing through the nose can influence the way we position and use the jaw, tongue, head, and neck.

Over time, these compensations may contribute to muscle tension and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms in some patients.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are complex and can have many causes. Nasal obstruction is certainly not responsible for every case of jaw pain. However, for patients who chronically struggle to breathe through their nose, particularly those who mouth breathe or experience sleep-disordered breathing, the nasal airway may be an important part of the overall picture.

           Fast Facts: The Nose-Jaw Connection

Your normal resting position matters. Comfortable nasal breathing allows the lips to remain closed while the tongue rests naturally against the palate and the jaw remains relaxed.

A blocked nose can encourage mouth breathing. When nasal airflow becomes difficult, the mouth may open to create another pathway for breathing.

Mouth breathing changes jaw and tongue position. Opening the mouth to breathe can alter the resting position of the mandible and tongue.

The head and neck may compensate, too. Some people instinctively move the head forward or alter neck posture in an effort to maintain a more open airway.

These changes can affect muscles around the jaw. The jaw, tongue, neck, and airway function as an interconnected system. Persistent changes in posture or muscle activity may contribute to fatigue, tension, and discomfort.

Nighttime breathing may be especially important. Nasal obstruction can contribute to increased respiratory effort, snoring, and sleep-disordered breathing. In some patients, disturbed sleep and airway instability may coexist with nighttime clenching or grinding.

What Happens When the Nose Is Blocked?

The human nose is designed to be the primary pathway for breathing. When airflow through the nose is comfortable, very little conscious effort is required to maintain an appropriate breathing posture.

That can change when the nasal airway becomes restricted.

can make nasal breathing difficult. The body then looks for another way to move air, and the simplest solution is often to open the mouth.

Occasional mouth breathing during a cold is unlikely to create a long-term problem. Chronic mouth breathing, however, can change the resting relationship between the tongue, jaw, and surrounding muscles.

The lower jaw may rest in a different position. The tongue may sit lower in the mouth rather than resting against the palate. Muscles responsible for stabilizing and moving the jaw may be recruited differently.

For someone already susceptible to TMD, these changes may add another source of stress to the system.

Breathing Is More Than Just the Nose and Mouth

The effects may extend beyond the jaw itself.

When breathing becomes difficult, people can unconsciously change the position of their head and neck to help maintain airflow. A forward-head posture, for example, changes the mechanical relationships among the neck muscles, jaw muscles, hyoid bone, tongue, and airway.

These structures do not operate independently.

Think of the nasal airway, tongue, jaw, throat, and neck as parts of a connected system. Changing the position or function of one component can influence the others.

Over time, increased muscular activity or abnormal resting posture may contribute to symptoms such as jaw fatigue, facial tension, headaches, clicking or popping around the TMJ, and discomfort when chewing.

What About Sleep, Clenching, and Grinding?

The connection becomes even more interesting during sleep.

Patients with nasal obstruction may experience increased breathing effort, snoring, fragmented sleep, or

           obstructive sleep apnea

. Sleep bruxism (clenching or grinding the teeth) can also occur in patients with sleep-disordered breathing, although the relationship is complex and bruxism has many possible causes.

Some patients wake with a sore jaw, tight facial muscles, headaches, or sensitive teeth and assume that the problem begins and ends with grinding.

But there may be another question worth asking:

How well are you breathing while you sleep?

If a patient has TMJ symptoms along with chronic nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, or waking with a dry mouth, evaluating the airway may provide valuable additional information.

Treat the Patient, Not Just the Jaw

TMJ dysfunction is multifactorial. Dental alignment, arthritis, injury, stress, muscle tension, bruxism, behavioral factors, and other conditions can all contribute. Improving nasal breathing should therefore not be viewed as a stand-alone treatment for TMJ dysfunction.

Instead, the nasal airway may represent one potentially overlooked piece of the puzzle.

For patients with persistent nasal obstruction and accompanying jaw symptoms, a comprehensive evaluation can identify whether a structural or inflammatory nasal problem is interfering with normal breathing. Depending on the cause, treatment may range from medical therapy to

procedures designed to improve nasal airflow

           .

The goal is not simply to “fix the jaw by fixing the nose.” It is to restore comfortable nasal breathing whenever possible and reduce the need for the body to compensate.

Better nasal breathing supports more natural breathing mechanics, and for some patients, understanding the airway may be an important step toward understanding why their jaw is under stress.

Potentially. Chronic nasal obstruction can encourage mouth breathing and changes in jaw, tongue, head, and neck positioning. These changes may contribute to muscle tension and TMJ discomfort in some patients. However, TMJ dysfunction has multiple possible causes, and nasal obstruction is not responsible for every case.

Can mouth breathing cause jaw tension or teeth grinding at night?

Chronic mouth breathing may alter the resting position of the jaw and tongue, potentially contributing to muscular tension. Nasal obstruction and sleep-disordered breathing may also coexist with nighttime clenching or grinding. However, teeth grinding has several possible causes, and the relationship between breathing disorders and bruxism is complex.

An ENT evaluation may be helpful if jaw discomfort occurs alongside persistent nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, or disrupted sleep. An ENT specialist can examine the nasal airway for structural or inflammatory problems that may contribute to breathing difficulties. TMJ symptoms may also require evaluation by a dental or other appropriate healthcare professional.

OTC nasal decongestants can provide temporary relief from nasal congestion.

Frequent or prolonged use of topical decongestant sprays can cause rebound congestion, or rhinitis medicamentosa.

Oral decongestants can affect systems beyond the nose and may not be appropriate for everyone.

Persistent nasal obstruction can have structural, inflammatory, or sinus-related causes.

An ENT evaluation can help identify why the nasal airway is blocked rather than repeatedly treating the symptom.

When Temporary Nasal Congestion Relief Becomes an Ongoing Solution

When your nose is completely blocked, an over-the-counter decongestant can feel like an easy solution. Topical nasal decongestant sprays may open the nose within minutes, while oral decongestants can temporarily reduce swelling in the nasal passages. Used appropriately and for a short period, these medications can be helpful. Problems arise when they become the ongoing solution to persistent nasal congestion.

If you repeatedly need a decongestant just to breathe comfortably through your nose, it may be time to ask a more important question: Why is your nose blocked in the first place?

Topical Decongestant Sprays: Fast Relief With an Important Limitation

Topical nasal decongestants such as oxymetazoline constrict blood vessels in the nasal lining. This reduces tissue swelling and can rapidly improve airflow. Because the effect can be dramatic, it is easy to understand why patients may begin using these sprays repeatedly.

However, frequent or prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion, a condition known as rhinitis medicamentosa. As the medication wears off, the nasal tissues become congested again, sometimes more severely. The patient uses another dose for relief, the nose opens temporarily, and the cycle repeats.

Over time, some patients feel unable to breathe without the spray. Breaking this cycle may require discontinuing the topical decongestant and treating the resulting inflammation under medical guidance. Product labeling for oxymetazoline generally warns against using it for more than three days unless directed by a physician.

Oral Decongestants Affect More Than Your Nose

Pseudoephedrine is an oral sympathomimetic decongestant. Rather than acting only inside the nose, it can affect blood vessels and other systems throughout the body. Potential side effects include increased blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, nervousness, restlessness, and difficulty sleeping.

Extra caution may be appropriate for people with cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure and for patients with certain other medical conditions, including glaucoma, thyroid disease, diabetes, or difficulty urinating due to prostate enlargement. Pseudoephedrine can also interact with certain medications, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Patients with medical conditions or those taking prescription medications should ask a physician or pharmacist whether an oral decongestant is appropriate for them.

Another oral decongestant, phenylephrine, has historically been included in many nonprescription cold and congestion products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has concluded that current evidence does not support the effectiveness of oral phenylephrine at the recommended over-the-counter dose for nasal congestion and has proposed removing oral phenylephrine from the OTC monograph.

Treating Congestion Is Not the Same as Treating Its Cause

Decongestants reduce a symptom. They do not necessarily correct the reason that nasal airflow is restricted. Persistent nasal blockage may be caused by a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, nasal valve narrowing or collapse, allergic inflammation,

This distinction is important. A medication that temporarily shrinks swollen tissue will not straighten a deviated septum or correct a narrowed nasal valve. Similarly, structural surgery is not the answer when inflammation or rhinitis is the primary problem. Effective treatment starts with identifying the actual source of obstruction.

The best long-term strategy depends on the diagnosis. Saline sprays or irrigations can help moisturize and clear the nasal passages without causing rebound congestion. For patients with allergic or inflammatory nasal disease, intranasal corticosteroid sprays may be appropriate and are fundamentally different from topical decongestant sprays. Antihistamines or other targeted therapies may also be useful depending on the patient's symptoms and diagnosis.

Patients who have become dependent on a topical decongestant spray should also seek guidance rather than simply increasing the frequency or dose.

An ENT examination can help determine whether the problem is primarily inflammatory, structural, sinus-related, or a combination of factors. Once the cause is identified, treatment can be directed at the underlying problem instead of repeatedly suppressing the symptom.

           The Bottom Line

Over-the-counter decongestants are not inherently bad medications. When used appropriately, they can provide useful short-term relief. The pitfall is allowing temporary relief to become a substitute for understanding persistent nasal obstruction.

If you continually reach for a decongestant in order to breathe through your nose, your congestion may be telling you something. At Hills ENT Institute, the goal is to determine why the nasal airway is blocked and develop a treatment plan aimed at restoring comfortable, sustainable nasal breathing.

If persistent nasal congestion is affecting your breathing, sleep, exercise, or quality of life, consider an evaluation with a nasal airway specialist.

Can nasal decongestant sprays cause rebound congestion?

Yes. Frequent or prolonged use of topical nasal decongestants can lead to rebound congestion, also known as rhinitis medicamentosa. As the medication wears off, congestion can return and sometimes become more severe.

Persistent nasal blockage can have several possible causes, including a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, nasal valve narrowing or collapse, allergic inflammation, chronic rhinitis, nasal polyps, or chronic sinus disease. An ENT evaluation can help identify the underlying source of the obstruction.

The nose warms, humidifies, and filters the air you breathe.

Chronic nasal obstruction can make breathing during exercise feel more difficult.

Mouth breathing during high-intensity exercise is normal. The goal is not to force nasal-only breathing.

Nasal obstruction may be caused by structural or inflammatory conditions.

Treatment should target the specific cause of nasal blockage rather than promise improved athletic performance.

Whether you are training for a race, playing recreational sports, lifting weights, or simply trying to stay active, breathing is central to performance. The nose is more than a passive passageway for air. It warms, humidifies, and filters inhaled air and contributes to normal respiratory physiology. When nasal airflow is chronically restricted, exercise may feel more difficult than it should.

           What Makes Nasal Breathing Different?

The nasal airway conditions the air before it reaches the lungs. Its lining helps trap particles, while its rich blood supply warms and humidifies inspired air. Nasal breathing also carries nitric oxide produced in the upper airway into the inspired airstream. Nitric oxide has important signaling effects in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, including effects on vascular tone.

At rest and during lower-to-moderate intensity exercise, comfortable nasal breathing can also encourage a slower, more controlled breathing pattern. As exercise intensity rises, however, opening the mouth to increase ventilation is normal physiology. The goal is not to force nasal-only breathing during maximal effort. Rather, athletes should have a nasal airway that functions well enough that obstruction is not unnecessarily limiting comfortable breathing.

Why Can a Blocked Nose Make Exercise Feel Harder?

A narrowed nasal airway increases resistance to airflow. Someone who cannot move air comfortably through the nose may transition to mouth breathing earlier, notice excessive dryness, feel that breathing is disproportionately difficult, or struggle to maintain a comfortable breathing rhythm. For some patients, the problem becomes especially noticeable during running, cycling, high-intensity training, or sleep and recovery after exercise.

Persistent nasal blockage is not always a conditioning problem. Common causes include a deviated nasal septum, enlarged turbinates, nasal valve narrowing or collapse, allergies, chronic rhinitis, and chronic or recurrent sinus disease. Identifying the cause matters because the best treatment depends on the anatomy and underlying condition.

Can Improving Nasal Airflow Improve Athletic Performance?

Correcting clinically significant nasal obstruction can make breathing feel easier and more comfortable, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed way to increase speed, strength, or VO2 max. The practical objective is to restore a functional nasal airway so that an athlete is not fighting avoidable obstruction during exercise, sleep, and recovery.

For patients who repeatedly feel that they cannot get enough air through their nose, an ENT evaluation can determine whether the limitation is inflammatory, structural, or a combination of both.

           Treatment Options for Nasal Blockage

Treatment begins with the diagnosis. Depending on the cause and severity of obstruction, options may include medical therapy as well as office-based or

Nasal septum reconstruction. A deviated or structurally compromised septum can significantly narrow one or both sides of the nasal airway. Septal surgery is designed to correct the obstructing anatomy and improve the passage of air through the nose. In more complex cases, reconstruction may be needed rather than a limited septoplasty.

VivAer. The nasal valve is the narrowest portion of the nasal airway and can be an important source of obstruction. For appropriately selected patients, VivAer uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to remodel tissue in the nasal valve region and improve airflow without traditional incisional nasal surgery.

RhinAer. Chronic rhinitis can cause persistent congestion, drainage, and postnasal symptoms. RhinAer uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to target posterior nasal nerves involved in chronic rhinitis symptoms. It is not a treatment for every form of structural nasal obstruction, but it can be useful when chronic rhinitis is a major contributor to a patient's nasal symptoms.

. In selected patients with chronic or recurrent sinusitis, inflammation and narrowing of the sinus drainage pathways may contribute to pressure, congestion, and impaired nasal function. Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive technique used to dilate appropriate sinus openings and improve drainage. It is intended for properly selected sinus disease rather than isolated nasal obstruction from a deviated septum or nasal valve problem.

When Should an Athlete See a Nasal Airway Specialist?

Consider an evaluation if you consistently struggle to breathe through your nose during activity, rely on mouth breathing even at relatively low levels of exertion, experience persistent congestion, notice one side is chronically blocked, or feel that nasal obstruction interferes with sleep or recovery. An examination can help distinguish a temporary inflammatory problem from an anatomic restriction that may benefit from targeted treatment.

Efficient breathing begins with an airway that is functioning as it should. Nasal breathing is not a shortcut to elite performance, and mouth breathing during intense exercise is normal. But chronic nasal obstruction can create an unnecessary barrier for active patients. At Hills ENT Institute, the goal is to identify the specific cause of nasal blockage and select treatment that addresses that cause, whether it is medical therapy, nasal septum reconstruction, treatment of the nasal valve with VivAer, treatment of chronic rhinitis with RhinAer, or balloon sinuplasty for appropriately selected sinus disease.

Is it bad to breathe through my mouth while exercising?

No. As exercise intensity increases, opening the mouth to increase ventilation is normal physiology. The goal is not to force nasal-only breathing during intense exercise, but to make sure nasal obstruction is not unnecessarily limiting comfortable breathing.

Chronic Runny Nose: Why It Won't Stop, and What Actually Helps

A runny nose that never seems to stop could be chronic rhinitis, not allergies. Hills ENT Institute in Bloomfield Hills explains the causes and treatment options.

           Quick Key Points

A runny nose that lasts for months may be chronic rhinitis rather than seasonal allergies.

Non-allergic rhinitis and overactive nasal nerves may not respond to antihistamines.

Structural issues and sinus inflammation can overlap with rhinitis symptoms.

An in-office nasal endoscopy can help identify the underlying cause.

Treatment options may include targeted medical therapy, RhinAer, VivAer, or balloon sinuplasty.

A runny nose is easy to ignore when it is tied to a cold or a bad allergy day. But for some people, it never really goes away. The tissues drip constantly, postnasal drip becomes a daily annoyance, and allergy medications that used to help stop making a difference. If that sounds familiar, you may be dealing with chronic rhinitis rather than a simple case of allergies.

regularly sees patients who have tried every allergy pill and nasal spray on the pharmacy shelf without lasting relief. In many of these cases, the underlying issue is not allergies at all, or it is allergies combined with a second, overlapping condition that needs its own treatment plan.

Runny Nose vs. Chronic Rhinitis: What's the Difference

An occasional runny nose from a cold, weather change, or short-term allergy exposure is normal and typically resolves within days. Chronic rhinitis is different. It refers to ongoing inflammation of the nasal lining that causes persistent symptoms, often for months or on a near-daily basis, including:

            Constant or frequent runny nose

            Persistent postnasal drip

Nasal congestion that fluctuates throughout the day

            Sneezing without an obvious trigger

Symptoms that flare with temperature changes, strong smells, or certain foods, not just pollen or dust

Unlike seasonal allergies, chronic rhinitis can affect people year-round and does not always respond to standard antihistamines.

Why Standard Allergy Treatment Sometimes Doesn't Work

Many patients assume that if allergy medication is not working, they simply need a stronger dose or a different brand. In reality, there are several possible explanations:

            Non-allergic rhinitis.

Nasal inflammation triggered by irritants, weather, or nerve sensitivity rather than a true allergen, which does not respond to antihistamines the way allergic rhinitis does.

            Overactive nasal nerves.

In some patients, the nerves controlling nasal secretions become overly sensitive, leading to constant drainage even without an active trigger.

            Structural issues.

A deviated septum or nasal valve collapse can worsen drainage and congestion symptoms alongside rhinitis.

Ongoing sinus inflammation can mimic or intensify rhinitis symptoms.

Because these causes overlap and can coexist, an accurate diagnosis matters more than simply trying another medication.

Getting to the root of a chronic runny nose typically starts with a detailed symptom history, including when symptoms started, what seems to trigger them, and what has already been tried. From there, Dr. Schleimer may perform an in-office

Not sure if it's a stuffy nose or something more serious? Hills ENT Institute in Bloomfield Hills explains the signs of chronic sinusitis and when to see an ENT.

           Quick Key Points

Congestion lasting 12 weeks or longer, or returning repeatedly, may point to a chronic condition.

Facial pressure, thick discharge, and a reduced sense of smell can be signs of chronic sinusitis.

Causes include chronic sinusitis, nasal valve collapse, a deviated septum, chronic rhinitis, and nasal polyps.

An in-office nasal endoscopy helps identify what is driving your symptoms.

Treatment depends on the cause and may range from medical management to in-office procedures.

A stuffy nose is one of those symptoms almost everyone brushes off. It comes with a cold, it comes with allergy season, and for most people it clears up on its own within a week or two. But when congestion sticks around for months, or keeps coming back every few weeks, it stops being a minor annoyance and starts being a sign that something else is going on.

Knowing the difference can save you months of frustration and

           What Counts as "Chronic"?

Occasional congestion from a cold or seasonal allergies is normal. Chronic nasal congestion or chronic sinusitis is generally defined as:

If your symptoms fit any of these patterns, it is worth having an ENT take a closer look rather than continuing to manage it with over-the-counter products.

Chronic sinus issues do not always look dramatic. Many patients describe symptoms that build gradually over months, including:

At Hills ENT Institute, evaluating chronic congestion usually starts with a detailed conversation about symptom history, followed by an in-office nasal endoscopy. This allows Dr. Schleimer to directly visualize the nasal passages and sinus openings using a thin, lighted scope, identifying inflammation, blockages, or structural issues that would not be visible from an external exam alone. In some cases, imaging may also be recommended to get a fuller picture of the sinus anatomy.

How a Custom Mandibular Advancement Device Works

For patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a fully custom mandibular advancement device (MAD) can be an effective alternative to CPAP therapy. These oral appliances are designed from precise digital impressions or scans of the patient's teeth and are fabricated specifically for the individual's anatomy. The device works by gently advancing the lower jaw forward during sleep, which helps stabilize the tongue and soft tissues of the throat, reducing airway collapse and improving airflow.

From an ENT perspective, MAD therapy is particularly valuable for patients whose airway obstruction occurs primarily at the level of the tongue base and soft palate. By increasing the upper airway dimensions and reducing tissue collapse, these appliances can significantly decrease snoring, improve oxygenation, and reduce apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores. Patients often find custom oral appliances more comfortable, portable, and easier to tolerate than CPAP.

Current clinical guidelines recognize custom, titratable mandibular advancement devices as an evidence-based treatment option for appropriately selected patients with mild to moderate OSA, as well as for patients with severe OSA who are unable to tolerate CPAP. Successful treatment requires collaboration between the sleep physician, ENT specialist, and qualified dental provider to ensure proper diagnosis, appliance design, titration, and long-term follow-up. Regular monitoring helps maximize effectiveness while minimizing potential dental or bite-related side effects.

when not properly managed. During an allergy flare-up, the body’s immune response to triggers like pollen, dust, or mold causes inflammation in the nasal passages. This inflammation leads to swelling of the sinus lining and increased mucus production.

Under normal conditions, mucus drains from the sinuses through small openings into the nasal cavity. However, when these passages become swollen and congested, drainage is impaired. Trapped mucus creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, increasing the risk of developing a sinus infection.

Patients may initially notice typical allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and clear nasal discharge. As congestion worsens, symptoms can progress to facial pressure, thick discolored mucus,

Preventing this progression is key. Early and consistent use of treatments such as saline irrigation, antihistamines, and intranasal corticosteroids can help control inflammation and maintain proper sinus drainage. If symptoms persist or worsen, evaluation by a healthcare professional is important to determine whether additional treatment is needed.

Why Your Sense of Smell Matters

Our sense of smell is often underappreciated, until it’s gone. Olfaction plays a vital role in daily life, from enhancing the enjoyment of food to detecting environmental dangers like smoke or gas. It is also closely tied to memory and emotional well-being, making its loss both physically and psychologically impactful.

Many patients struggle with chronic nasal obstruction, congestion, or sinus pressure that does not fully respond to medications. In-office procedures such as balloon sinuplasty, VivAer®, and RhinAer® offer effective, minimally invasive solutions designed to restore comfortable, natural breathing.

Balloon sinuplasty is ideal for patients with chronic or recurrent sinusitis. Using a small, flexible balloon, the sinus openings are gently expanded to improve drainage and reduce inflammation—without cutting or removing tissue. This approach preserves normal anatomy and typically allows for a faster recovery compared to traditional sinus surgery.

VivAer® is designed for patients whose nasal obstruction is caused by nasal valve collapse, a common but often underdiagnosed condition. By using controlled radiofrequency energy, VivAer® reshapes and strengthens the nasal valve area, improving airflow and reducing the sensation of blockage.

RhinAer® targets chronic rhinitis, including symptoms such as persistent runny nose, postnasal drip, and congestion. This procedure uses radiofrequency energy to calm overactive nasal nerves, addressing the root cause of symptoms rather than simply masking them with medications.

These procedures are performed comfortably in the office setting, typically under local anesthesia, and require little downtime. They are especially beneficial for patients who want to avoid more invasive surgery or long-term reliance on medications.

If you experience ongoing nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through your nose, or chronic sinus symptoms, these advanced treatments may offer lasting relief. A thorough evaluation can help determine which option is best suited to your specific condition and goals.

The nose filters, warms, and humidifies incoming air.

Nasal breathing increases nitric oxide production, supporting circulation and oxygen delivery.

Why Nasal Breathing Is Important for Your Health

Nasal breathing is a simple yet powerful practice that supports overall health and well-being. Unlike mouth breathing, which can be shallow and inefficient, breathing through the nose optimizes how your body takes in and uses oxygen. The nasal passages act as a natural filtration system, trapping dust, allergens, and pathogens before they reach the lungs.

One of the most significant benefits of nasal breathing is the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that enhances oxygen absorption and improves blood flow. This can lead to better energy levels, enhanced athletic performance, and improved cardiovascular health. Additionally, nasal breathing encourages slower, deeper breaths, which can help calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

Over time, consistent nasal breathing may also support better sleep quality, reduce snoring, and improve focus throughout the day. By making a conscious effort to breathe through your nose, especially during rest and light activity, you can tap into a natural and effective way to support your body’s vital functions.

           Snoring / Sleep Apnea

Snoring occurs from vibration of relaxed airway tissues.

Obstructive sleep apnea involves repeated airway collapse during sleep.

Nasal obstruction can worsen both snoring and apnea.

Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes to surgical intervention.

           From Dr. Schleimer:

Since 2016, I’ve had the privilege of helping patients breathe easier, sleep better, and feel healthier every day. As an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon, my practice focuses on some of the most common—but often overlooked—issues that affect quality of life: nasal breathing problems, chronic sinus infections, and snoring or sleep apnea.

Many people don’t realize how much these conditions can impact their daily lives. Struggling to breathe through your nose, dealing with constant sinus pressure, or waking up tired can become “normal”—but they don’t have to be.

I specialize in diagnosing and treating the root causes of these problems. Whether it’s correcting a deviated septum, relieving sinus blockage, or improving airflow during sleep, I offer personalized care and advanced, minimally invasive treatment options designed around your needs and goals.

Sinusitis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the sinuses become inflamed due to infection, allergies, or other factors, leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, headaches, and difficulty breathing. While many cases of sinusitis can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes, some individuals experience chronic or recurrent sinus infections that require surgical intervention.

           Understanding Sinusitis: Acute vs. Chronic

Sinusitis can be classified into two main types:

            Acute Sinusitis

: This is a short-term infection that typically lasts less than four weeks and is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms usually improve with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter treatments.

            Chronic Sinusitis

: This condition persists for 12 weeks or longer despite treatment. It may result from ongoing inflammation, structural issues within the nasal passages, or unresolved infections.

           Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Before considering surgery, most ENT specialists recommend conservative treatments, including:

            Nasal irrigation with saline solutions

            Intranasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation

            Antihistamines for allergy-related sinus issues

Antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present

Lifestyle changes such as avoiding allergens and using a humidifier

If these treatments fail to provide relief and sinusitis symptoms persist, surgery may be a viable option.

           When Is Sinus Surgery Necessary?

Surgical intervention is typically considered for individuals who experience:

            Chronic or recurrent sinus infections

that do not improve with medication

            Severe nasal polyps

or structural abnormalities (such as a deviated septum) that obstruct sinus drainage

Frequent sinus headaches or facial pain

             linked to blocked sinuses

            Breathing difficulties

             due to persistent nasal congestion

           Types of Sinus Surgery

There are several surgical options available depending on the patient’s condition:

            Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS)

: A minimally invasive procedure using a small camera and specialized instruments to remove blockages, polyps, or inflamed tissue inside the sinuses.

            Balloon Sinuplasty

: A less invasive option where a small balloon is inserted into the sinus passage and inflated to widen the airways, improving drainage and airflow.

            Septoplasty

: If a deviated nasal septum contributes to chronic sinus issues, this surgery corrects the nasal structure to enhance breathing and sinus drainage.

           Recovery and Expected Outcomes

Most sinus surgeries are outpatient procedures with minimal downtime. Patients can expect mild discomfort, congestion, and swelling in the days following surgery. Complete recovery usually takes a few weeks, and many patients experience significant relief from chronic sinus symptoms post-surgery.
